Exchange 2007 SP1 and Streaming Backup
Filed in Streaming Backup on Aug.19, 2007
Exchange 2007 SP1 will make a change that by default will not allow a remote streaming backup to function on standalone or clustered server.
This change is to make the product more secure.
Products like NT backup perform a streaming backup.
Event Log error:
Information Store (3612) A remote (TCP/IP) based streaming backup was attempted. This functionality has been disabled by default settings.
How do you fix this:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem
Name: Enable Remote Streaming Backup
Type: DWORD
Value: 0 = default behavior (remote backup disabled)
1 = remote backup enabled

Thankyou for this. Man, SP1 adds so much functionality, and then slowly takes some away at the same time…
Thankyou.

So what is the most economical method to perform a streaming backup of a ex2k7 database?
can we copy ntbackup.exe to a win2008 server??
me thinks probably not, but may give it a try

So Windows 2008 has remove the exchange aware piece at the moment and there should be some intergration to come later ….. I would not recommend streaming backups as they are slowing and more overhead on the system. Most products have moved to VSS and would look at DPM or other products which utilize vss.

Gotta love stuff like this. Yea, let’s go ahead and silently remove a feature which breaks your backups. Awesome.
They screwed with Exchange so much in 2007 that don’t even want to recommend it to any of our clients.

actually moving from streaming to VSS is a way better solution as streaming backups are much slower to perform. This feature is disabled for security purposes and a simple reg key can turn it back on.
I believe Ex 07 is a solid product but there are a number of features that I liked better in E2k3…

question, would this block backup exec remote backups? I’m thinking this is what our problem is, but it’s using VSS. And your last post implies that VSS should allow the backup to still work.

It should not block a VSS backup but just streaming…..
