Exchange 2007 Transport Rules
Filed in transport rules on Nov.22, 2007
One of the best new features of Exchange 2007 was the introduction of transport rules. Before I go into the creation of transport rules lets understand some of the changes in Exchange 2007 message flow.
Exchange 2007 has drastically changed how messages are transmitted between users and you will find out that all messages now pass through what is now called a hub transport server regaurdless of the destination, which allows transport rules to be used.
Transport rules are made up of 1. Condidtions 2. Actions and 3. Exceptions
Lets use EMC to create a new transport rule……
Open EMC–> Organizational Config –>Hub Transport
Open EMC–> Organizational Config –>Hub Transport
In the Actions Pane Select “New Transport Rule”
A new window will open allowing us to give our new rule a name and description. There is also a check box to “Enable” the rule.
We are presented with the following conditions:
From people
From a member of distro list
From user insidr or outside the organization
Sent to people
Sent to a member of a distro list
Set to user inside or outside organization
Between members of distro list and distro list
When any Recipient in the to field is a member of distro list
When any Recipient of the Recipient in the CC field is people
When any of the Recipient in the CC field is a member of distor list
Marked with classification
When the subject field contains specific words
When the subject field or body of themessage contains specific words
When the message header contains specific words
When the subject contains text pattern
When the subject field or the body of the message contains text pattern
When the message header contains text pattern
When the from address contains text pattern
When the scl rating is greater than or = to limit
When the size of any attachment is greater than or = to limit
Mark with importance

The next screen will present us with an Action:
Log an event
Prepend the subject with string
Apply message classification
Append disclaimer text using font,size,color
Set the scl value
Set the header value
Remove header
Add a recp in the to field address
Copy the message to address
Bcc the message to additional address
Redirect the message to addresses
Send bounce message to sender with enhanced status code
Siliently drop the message

I am now going to create a new Transport Rule that will deny a user Jodie from sending messages larger then 1MB to anyone except Brian.
1. From EMC select New transport rule
2. Add a description and a name
2. Add a description and a name
I gave my the name of : Deny Large Attachments from Jodie
and description of: This rule will deny Jodie the ability to send attachments over 1MB

3. Click Next and select the appropriate condition (s)

3. Click Next and select the appropriate condition (s)
For this rule I selected “From People” and When the size of any attachment is greater than or = to limit.
Select the blue wording at the bottom, this will open a new window and allow you to select your user
Now the we have selected our user Jodie Bartos we will need to select our Action (s)
Select the blue wording at the bottom an input the message you want the user to receive.
Now we are presented with the exception screen, as stated I want to allow Jodie to send messaage larger then 1mb to only Brian….
for this rule select the exception of Except when the message sent to people

Once again select the blue wording and a new window will open that will allow you to select you users.
The next screen will show us a summary of the selections we have made
Now that we have created our rule, lets test to see if it functions as we planned…..
I logged onto my Jodie Bartos mailbox and will attempt to send a 2mb file to Jim and then to Brian. If the rule functions as it should then we will receive a bounce message when sending to Jim and the message will be delivered to Brian.
Test 1:
Send 2mb file from Jodie Bartos–> Jim Mcbee
As you can see in the bottom of the bounce is the message that we used in our rule
Now lets logon to Brian’s mailbox and see if we receieve the message
